What the differences mean for you
- Low-priced items. Poshmark's flat fee under $15 and eBay's per-order fee both take a larger share of small sales. Run the numbers before listing cheap items.
- Fulfillment. On all three you pick, pack and ship. None stores your inventory. That is why a labeled shelf and a SKU system matter once you have more than a handful of items.
- Sales tax. On all three, the platform handles sales tax at checkout for marketplace orders, so you usually do not collect it yourself. Sales on your own website or in person are separate. See sales tax across state lines.
- Your income still counts. Platforms collecting sales tax does not replace your income reporting. See Form 1099-K.
- Selling on several platforms. This spreads risk and reaches different buyers. It also means more tracking, which is another reason to use SKUs.
Your registration still matters
Marketplace tax collection does not remove the reasons to register with Illinois for sales tax if you will buy inventory for resale or sell outside a marketplace. See sales tax registration and the CRT-61 resale certificate. Read more about eBay in selling on eBay.
