How to get an EIN: free, online and same day
An EIN is a number the IRS uses to identify your business. Getting one is free and usually takes about 15 minutes.

The short version
- The IRS charges nothing for an EIN. It warns people to beware of websites that charge for one.
- If you apply online and are approved, the EIN is issued immediately. Print or save the confirmation letter.
- The online application works during set hours (Eastern Time). It runs Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 6 p.m. to midnight.
Before you apply
- Form the business first. If you are creating an LLC or corporation, the IRS says to form it with the state first, or the application may be delayed.
- You must be the responsible party, the person who controls the business, or an authorized representative.
- You need the responsible party's Social Security number or ITIN. Enter it yourself on the IRS site only.
- The business must be based in the U.S. or its territories.
Good to know
- Finish the application in one sitting. It cannot be saved, and it times out after 15 minutes of no activity.
- The IRS issues one EIN per responsible party per day.
- Use the exact legal name of the business.
- You will use your EIN to open a business bank account and when you register for Illinois sales tax.
- Keep the number private. Do not post it in videos or screenshots.
Do not pay for it
Sites that charge a fee for an EIN are selling you something the IRS gives away. Use irs.gov and look for the address ending in .gov.
